Dream of the Red Chamber Performance
(October 2024)
October 12, 2024
Dear Friends,
Excitement is rapidly building towards the November opening of the UMN Opera Theatre’s
world premiere production of a new chamber orchestral version of Dream of the Red Chamber.
At CHF we can hardly contain ourselves, to see the project we initiated and funded fifteen years
ago finally coming home!
Many of you were with us when we were privileged to present a preview of the then-new Opera
by composer Bright Sheng in November 2015 at The Marsh. Everywhere we turned we were
greeted by a sea of smiling faces! Ten months later San Francisco Opera presented the world
premiere of this Opera to worldwide attention and accolades. This sumptuous production went
on to sold-out houses in Hong Kong, Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan, before returning to San
Francisco for a triumphant revival in 2020.
Grand as this production by San Francisco Opera was, a reality check began to sink in: hardly
any other opera company would be able to mount this production – the cost would be simply
prohibitive. So once again we launched into action, this time to commission Bright to create a
chamber orchestration version that any medium-sized opera company or university conservatory
would be able to present. Bright, who shares our passion to promote mutual understanding and
friendships among all peoples through artistic undertakings, readily complied. David Walsh,
Director of UMN Opera Theatre, and Mark Russell Smith, Director of Orchestral Studies at the
UMN School of Music, were both deeply involved in the creation of this new version.
In addition to a reduced orchestration, this new Opera version, to be portrayed by an all-Asian
cast, will present several other innovative features. One is the employment of Chinese opera
movements and gestures by all principal singers that will appear graceful and natural but at the
same time evocative. Keenly aware of the fragility of these gorgeous young voices studying at
the University’s School of Music, Bright has also relaxed his vocal demands on them.
Another innovation in this Opera will be the deployment of dancers to amplify a soloist’s
innermost feelings. All three principals of the love triangle, DaiYu, BaoYu and BaoChai,
will have dancer doubles who will appear at various times throughout the Opera. Their
choreography, a unique combination of classical Chinese dance and modern American dance,
has been created especially for them by New York-based legendary Chinese
dancer/choreographer Zhongmei Li.
Weaving all these innovations together on stage will be philosopher/TaiChi dancer master, Al
ChungLiang Huang. As a Taoist priest, Al will be guiding and watching over his charges,
sighing and grieving with them as he slips into and out of reality and illusion. Come November,
you will witness an evocative and immersive production inside a transformed Ted Mann
Concert Hall!
We cannot wait for you to experience this magic for yourselves! Therefore we would like to
invite you to join us in celebrating what happens when a diverse group of individuals comes
together, united in the single purpose of showcasing a great Chinese masterpiece, creating
opportunities for communication on the universality of human foibles, and reaching out to
touch one another’s heart in friendship and understanding.
To that end, CHF has created the following opportunities to come together during the weekend
